Icon Tutorial - 1st Ever
1st tutorial ever.

As requested by [info]sugared. :)

-Made on PS CS 2
-Involves Selective Coloring
-Not Translatable, Sorry!

From this example picture Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket to Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

1. Open up a 100x100 base with a white background.

2. Take three pictures from the same set, or the same picture cropped three different ways and apply the following coloring to all three of them. (Since my 3 pictures are from the same set, I just made the coloring on one and dropped it into the original just like you would for a .psd.)

3. Open pictures and lighten them, sharpen them, whatever. For this picture I made one screen layer and reduced the opacity to 33%

4. Selective Color Layer #1
REDS: -100, +100, +19, 0
YELLOWS: -100, +31, -100, +15
NEUTRALS: +25, +9, -5, +7

5. Selective Color Layer #2
REDS: -21, -29, +7, +11, 0
YELLOWS: -100, +9, +100, 0
BLACKS: 0, 0, 0, +40

6. HUE/SATURATION Layer
MASTER: Saturation +7
REDS: Saturation +11

7. After you’ve done that for all 3 pictures, crop and position them on your white base. Use the arrow keys to “nudge” them into place. For this icon, I think I had about two nudges between the spaces.

8. Flatten your image.

9. In your Layers Palette, double click your layer which is now set to “background.” Then click the Add Layer Style button (the one that looks like a little f), and hit Stroke. Change your Size to 1, Position Inside, and change color to white (#ffffff).

– Tip: You can also just place three pictures on the same base and use your rectangle marquee tool to make a divider section, fill with white and get the same effect.
– Hope all this helps/makes sense.
– Questions and suggestions welcome. :)

I think the way the pictures are placed looks cool---nice diagonal effect. Which part didn't work? Not that it matters, because the icon came out with spaces anyway. It doesn't matter how you get there as long as you get the effect you're looking for. :D Thanks for trying the tut! If you have any other questions let me know though.

Hee! I was inspired and unlazy for once sugared. ;) Glad you liked it. Love your color technique, great blues, esp. w/the crying face. :)

I was trying to figure out how you can get bright reds with color balance and color layers. Selective color is the only way I've ever seen nice popping red but I'm sure there's a way.......

Thank you so much :]

Uhm, let's see. The way I did that first one was just with different color layers. I have two tuts that I use when coloring. The one I used on that one is just different color layers [one with multiply, one with soft light and one with exclusion I think ]. I never really use selective colors & I get reds to pop just fine. If you want I can post the links to those tuts and you can try them out :]

This is the one I went off of for the icon I just commented [i didn't merge the layers, for the first blue i did a lighter shade, for the last color burn i did a lighter shade of tan.] But, anywho I lovvve this one to death.

This one is another I use. It works pretty great; especially for the mood theme I'm working on, excpet i always have the saturation at atleast 33, sometimes higher [30 just doesn't make it pop enough for my liking] :] hope that helps

Thank you for going through the trouble of tracking those down for me sugared! I think I'm hiding down there in the second one...the picture I used was waaay too light so it came out practically white. LOL I didn't know what I was doing with screen layers back then. :D I'll have to check it out again. On the first one---love the greens effect. Can't wait to try and re-try. :)

Yea, for the second one when you have to set the curves, I never set the bottom one to 185. I usually do 140-170, depending on how dark / light the pic was to begin with.

Thanks again for making this tut !

Oh lookie! hehe I liked this tutorial! It was fun. : ) But I have to say that drawing the lines with the rectangle marquee tool was a lot easier than the other way you first mentioned in #7.
